Advent: December 15
Theme:
Elijah and the prophets of Baal
Symbol:
A burning altar
Read
1 Kings 18:16-40 (Joshua 24:15, John 14:6)
Ask:
What challenge does Elijah give the prophets of Baal? (Whichever God supernaturally lights a sacrifice with fire is the one true God)
How do the prophets try to get Baal’s attention? (They cried out all day long and cut themselves) What happens when the prophets of Baal give their sacrifice? (Nothing)
Why does Elijah add water to the altar? (To demonstrate how powerful God is) What is the outcome of Elijah’s sacrifice to God? (God hears and answers Elijah’s prayer and consumes the sacrifice, the wood, and the stones)
What does Elijah pray for in vs. 36-37? (That the people would know God and turn their hearts back to him) Compare this to Jesus’ prayer before His sacrifice in John 17:1-3.
Sing:
Go Tell it on the Mountain
Pray:
God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, may we always know and confess You as the only true God. Thank You for accepting Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf. Today, let it be known in our home and town that You are our God and that we are Your servants. Amen.
