Advent: December 11

Theme:

Joshua and Jericho

Symbol:

A ram’s horn

Read

Joshua 6:1-20 (Hebrews 11:30)

Ask:

  • What did God command Joshua and the Israelites to do? (To march around Jericho once for 6 days and then 7 times on the seventh day and scream and blow trumpets). Was this plan normal? (No) What was God trying to teach them? (That victory is the Lord’s).

  • Why was it important that the ark of the covenant was with them? (The ark was where God’s presence dwelt). What does the ark represent? (Exodus 25:22)

  • Like God’s plan to defeat Jericho, often the world thinks God’s ways are foolish. In what ways was Jesus’ coming foolish to the world? (1 Corinthians 1:18-30)

Sing:

A Mighty Fortress

Pray:

Our Conqueror, we believe You have the power to do all things. Strengthen our faith through stories like Jericho that remind us of Your faithfulness. May we obey Your Word, even when it doesn’t make sense. Thank You for defeating our enemies of sin, Satan, and death in the most unexpected way of Jesus’ death on the cross and resurrection. Amen.
