Advent: December 13

Theme:

King David

Symbol:

A King’s Crown

Read

1 Samuel 16:1-13 (John 7:37-43)

Ask:

  • What command does God give Samuel? (Anoint one of Jesse’s sons to be the next king.) Why? (God has rejected Saul as king).

  • What characteristics did Samuel look for in the new king? (Outward appearance) What does God look at? (v. 7) (God looks at the heart).

  • What happens to David after he is anointed with oil? (v. 13) (The Holy Spirit rushed upon him). How is this similar to Jesus? (Matt. 3:13-17) (The Holy Spirit came upon him when He was baptized).

  • Read 2 Samuel 7:11-16. Summarize the covenant that God makes to David. Who ultimately fulfills this promise? (Luke 1:26-33) (Jesus)

Sing:

Crown Him with Many Crowns

Pray:

King of kings and Lord of lords, You reign forever and ever. God, forgive us for often judging by outward appearances and help us to look at the heart. Thank You Jesus for giving us Your Holy Spirit to help us. Amen.
